Westchester County Airport (HPN): the chauffeur’s guide to the small airport that beats LGA

Westchester County Airport in White Plains is the airport our local clients should be using more than they do. From Mohegan Lake it is a 22-minute run on the Taconic and I-684. The terminal has five gates. You can be from the curb to the gate in 15 minutes on a quiet morning. For a certain kind of trip, HPN beats LaGuardia and JFK in every measurable way — and for another kind of trip, it does not. Here is how the chauffeur side of this airport actually works.

The terminal

HPN is a single small terminal at 240 Airport Road in White Plains. There are five gates, two ticket counters per airline, one TSA checkpoint, and a baggage claim hall that is roughly the size of a Whole Foods produce section. Total terminal footprint is under 80,000 square feet, which is smaller than some of the FBO buildings at Newark. The Arrivals curb is on the lower level facing the parking garage; Departures is the upper level. There is one set of doors per level — there is no “Door 4 at Terminal C” navigation here. If a passenger says they have landed at HPN, you go to one door and they are there.

The airlines and where they fly

HPN’s commercial roster in 2026 is JetBlue, American, Delta Connection, United Express, and Breeze. JetBlue flies to Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa, Nantucket, and seasonal slots to Charleston. American Eagle covers Charlotte, DC National, Chicago O’Hare, and Miami. Delta Connection runs Atlanta and Detroit. United Express handles Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles. Breeze added Charleston, Norfolk, and Raleigh-Durham in the last two years. The airport is slot-restricted, so the flight count is capped and the routes do not change as wildly as larger airports.

Why HPN beats LGA from Westchester

For our local Westchester and Putnam clients flying to any of the cities HPN serves, the math is brutal in HPN’s favor. A Mohegan Lake to LGA run is 45 minutes door-to-curb on a good day and 75 on a bad one. Same trip to HPN is 22 minutes regardless of the day, because we never hit the Hutch, the Cross Bronx, or the GCP. Add the LGA terminal walk and TSA queue (15-25 minutes) versus HPN’s 3-minute checkpoint, and the savings on a single trip is over an hour each way. For a quick Florida weekend or a same-day business trip to DC, HPN turns a 12-hour day into a 9-hour day.

When HPN doesn’t work

HPN is not a hub. There are no nonstops to the West Coast, Europe, or Asia. International service is limited to Nassau and a seasonal Bermuda flight on JetBlue. If your route is to anywhere not on the route map above, HPN forces a connection — usually at CLT, ORD, or ATL — and that connection eats every minute you saved on the curb. For those trips JFK and Newark are the right choice.

Parking economy: Premium Garage vs Long-Term

HPN parking is the underrated reason to fly from here. The Premium Garage attached to the terminal is $28 per day in 2026, with covered, well-lit spaces 90 seconds from the check-in counter. The Long-Term Lot, served by a 24-hour shuttle, is $14 per day. Both are cash or card and both honor pre-paid online reservations. By comparison, LaGuardia economy parking is $39 per day plus the AirTrain-to-nothing situation, and JFK’s economy lot is $35 per day with a 15-minute bus ride to the terminal. For a 5-day Florida trip, HPN saves $100 in parking alone — which is real money against a chauffeur drop-off and pickup.

The chauffeur drop-off pattern

We drop at the upper-level Departures curb, which has space for maybe 8 vehicles at a time and turns over quickly. Curbside enforcement at HPN is the friendliest of any airport we work — the County Police are stationed there but they hand-wave only on actual obstruction. Standard procedure: pull to the curb, open the trunk, hand the bags to the passenger, confirm flight and gate, and pull off in under 90 seconds. We do not park at the curb to escort passengers inside unless they have specifically requested it (mobility, unaccompanied minor, first-time traveler). The whole drop-off takes less time than the parking-lot shuttle ride at most other airports.

The cell-phone lot

HPN’s cell-phone lot is on the south side of the airport off King Street, signed before the terminal entrance. It is free, has no time limit posted, and is shaded by trees that lose leaves in October and gain them back in April. It is the easiest cell-phone lot in the region to work from. We stage there and roll in when the passenger texts they are at the curb.

The approach: Taconic vs I-684

From Mohegan Lake the standard approach is Taconic Parkway south to I-684 south, exit 2 at Westchester Avenue, then a short hop to Airport Road. The whole drive is 22 miles and 22 minutes outside of rush. During morning rush (7-9am), I-684 backs up at the I-287 merge near Purchase, adding 8-12 minutes. For HPN drop-offs targeting an 8am flight, we leave Mohegan Lake at 6:45am and the passenger is at the gate by 7:30. That kind of margin is impossible at LGA.
