Mohegan Lake sits in an unusual spot for car service. The 10547 ZIP code straddles the border between the Town of Yorktown and the Town of Cortlandt, with the lake itself anchoring a residential pocket that feels more like the Hudson Valley than central Westchester. We have been running car service out of Mohegan Lake for years, and the things that surprise new clients are almost always about geography — pickup times, route choices, and tolls that look different from what you would expect if you have used a car service in White Plains or Greenwich.
The local geography
Mohegan Lake is roughly 20 miles north of White Plains and 45 miles north of midtown Manhattan. The hamlet sits along Route 6, with US-202 cutting through it east-to-west. To the south is Yorktown Heights, to the east is the Taconic State Parkway, and to the west is Peekskill and the Hudson River. The Bear Mountain Parkway runs from Mohegan Lake west to Bear Mountain Bridge, providing the fastest route to anything on the west side of the Hudson.
What this means in practice: a pickup at 10547 is closer to the Taconic than to I-684, closer to the Bear Mountain Bridge than to the Tappan Zee, and closer to Stewart Airport than to LaGuardia in some scenarios. Route choice depends heavily on destination.
The road network we actually use
Taconic State Parkway
The Taconic is the workhorse for trips north and south. From Mohegan Lake we hop on at the Underhill Avenue entrance or at Route 6 and run it south toward the Sprain Brook Parkway for trips to White Plains and the city, or north for trips into Dutchess and Columbia counties. The Taconic is faster than I-684 most of the day because it does not absorb the I-84 interchange traffic.
I-684 and the Saw Mill
For trips to Connecticut, Westchester County Airport, and points east, we cut over to I-684 via Underhill Avenue and Route 35 through Katonah. I-684 runs cleanly between 5am and 3pm and backs up southbound from 3pm to 7pm. The Saw Mill River Parkway is the alternative for trips into the city or to LaGuardia and Newark.
Bear Mountain Parkway and US-9
For anything across the Hudson — Stewart Airport, the Garden State Parkway, Newark — the Bear Mountain Parkway is the cleanest option. It is a quiet two-lane parkway that connects to US-9D and the Bear Mountain Bridge in about 12 minutes. From the bridge you pick up US-6 west or the Palisades Parkway south.
Typical airport routes from 10547
HPN — Westchester County Airport
From Mohegan Lake to HPN is 25-30 minutes via I-684 south to the airport exit. There is no faster option. Pickup time is 1 hour 15 minutes before a domestic flight on a weekday morning, 1 hour 30 minutes on a Friday afternoon.
LGA — LaGuardia
LaGuardia is 60-80 minutes from Mohegan Lake depending on the time of day. The route is Taconic south to the Sprain to the Cross County to the Hutch, then the Whitestone Bridge. Pickup time is 2 hours 30 minutes before a domestic flight on a weekday, 2 hours 45 minutes on a Saturday morning, and 3 hours during summer peaks.
JFK — Kennedy
JFK from Mohegan Lake is 75-105 minutes. Route is the same as LGA to the Whitestone, then continuing on the Van Wyck. Pickup time is 3 hours 15 minutes for an international flight on a weekday, longer on Saturdays.
EWR — Newark
Newark is 75-100 minutes depending on bridge choice. We almost always take Bear Mountain Parkway to the Bear Mountain Bridge, then US-9W to the Palisades Parkway to the GWB lower level or to the I-287 westbound to the Garden State. The Bear Mountain route is consistently faster than dropping south through Westchester to the Tappan Zee.
Why pickup times differ from White Plains
A client moving from White Plains to Mohegan Lake is sometimes surprised that our quoted pickup times are 20-30 minutes earlier than they remember from their old service. The reason is purely additive: Mohegan Lake is 20 miles north of White Plains on every airport route except HPN. There is no shortcut that closes that gap — you simply have to leave earlier.
The good news is that 10547 is closer than White Plains to Stewart International Airport (SWF), which is 35-40 minutes via the Bear Mountain Bridge and I-84 west. For destinations Stewart serves, it is the fastest commercial airport from Mohegan Lake by a wide margin.
What a local operator does differently
A car service that knows Mohegan Lake will: pre-drive the residential streets to know where the driveway access is, route around the Route 6/202 morning bottleneck at Lexington Avenue, default to Bear Mountain Parkway for west-of-Hudson trips, and quote pickup times against real Taconic traffic patterns rather than against a map app’s optimistic estimate. The first time a chauffeur drives to your house should not be the day of your flight.
Standby and round-trip pricing
Mohegan Lake is far enough from the city and major airports that round-trip pricing — where you book the return at the time of the outbound — often beats two one-way reservations. If your return is on a known flight, give us the arrival info up front and we will quote both legs together. The same applies to events in the city where you want a car to wait on standby rather than ordering a return separately.
